Vellalar College For Women is a pioneer in women's education, boasting to its credit remarkable contribution towards empowerment and upliftment of rural women moulding them into academically and professionally competent, self-sufficient and self-confident individuals outstanding in their respective avocations.  Having been established in July 1970, the College has the twin distinction of being the first women's college as also the only aided Women's college in Erode District. 

Education, particularly higher education is the most effective and the best way for the emancipation of women. It can be said that the credit of putting Erode on the national map of women's education goes to the First President of the institution Thiru V.M. Kailasa Gounder and the First Secretary of the institution S.C. Sengottuvellapan who were the chief architects of this institution. They nurtured and cradled this institution with far-sighted vision. Thiru S.C. Sengottuvelappan was succeeded by Thiru S. Duraisamy gounder. The expansion of this educational edifice, its achievements and laurels are the fruits of their perseverance and industry.

Dr. L. K. Muthuswamy, Thiru. A. M. Nallaswamy Gounder, Thiru. K. Chinnaswamy were all mentors of blessed memories who were behind the link and growth of this institution.  During the 36  years of its existence, the college has made phenomenal progress in the field of higher education and established itself as one of the best in the state, offering a wide variety of courses ranging from U.G. to Ph.D. The present secretary and correspondent Thiru. S.D.Chandrasekar is a dynamic personality, an eminent educationist and the guiding spirit directing successful endeavours.

The former Principals of the institution Selvi P.C.Padmavathi, Selvi Saraswathi Bhatji, Ms. P. Lakshmi, Dr. (Mrs.) Kamaleswari Ramasamy,  Dr. (Ms) S. Leelavathy , Dr. (Mrs) M. Lokanayaki and Mrs. Chandra Thangavel played a pivotal role in the smooth functioning of the college. Mrs. Chandra Thangavel continues her committed service to this institution as Dean, Vellalar Educational Trust after her retirement. The college is marching forward under the able guidance of the present Principal Dr. (Mrs) R.Ganga. The college is awarded Autonomy by University Grants Commission and Bharathiyar University from the academic year 2007 - 2008. The college is re-accredited by NAAC with 'A' Grade from September 2008.
